April/May 2012, extract from emails Lynne Smith (nee Fletcher)                   MARY GRACE FLETCHER

Dear William,

My name is Lynne Smith. I live in Independence, Missouri, USA. I believe I'm one of your distant McArthur cousins.
My maternal grandmother was Mary McArthur, second daughter of Donald McArthur and Roseann Rodgers.
This past Monday my nephew Brent sent me a copy of Mary's death certificate (he found it on ancestry.com). Yesterday my brother Malcolm (born in US, living in Wroxham, Norwich GB) sent me the link to your McArthur family website. I spent a couple hours reading through it, grinning the whole time.

Here's what I know about three of Donald McArthur's missing sisters:

My grandmother, Mary McArthur Fletcher, died in Chicago, Illinois, USA in January, 1930.
She was born in Glasgow on December 14, 1877. She met and married James Fletcher, an Englishman, in Glasgow. They emigrated to Canada, and then to Fall River, Massachusetts.

Mary's younger sister Agnes came to Canada to help Mary raise her family. Mary and James Fletcher had nine children: Donald, Daniel, Howarth, Harold, Roseanne, Elizabeth, Mary Grace (my mother), Minnie and Ruth.
My first cousins and I called Agnes Auntie. She never married. When Mary died, Auntie lived with Roseann (we called her Aunt Cissie) and her husband and kept house for them until her death, here in Independence, in the 1970's.

Mary and Agnes' sister Minnie, Donald and Roseann's youngest daughter, also emigrated. I met Minnie when I was a teen. Her married name was Ferguson. Her family lived in New York.

The sisters Maggie and Rosann were a surprise to me. I don't recall ever hearing their names, though perhaps I did as a child and I just don't remember. Now, of course, I wish I'd been paying attention, and taking notes. :)

We know from passenger manifests unearthed by my nephew Brent that Mary McArthur Fletcher made at least two trips back to Scotland to visit her mother, Roseann. We also have 2 diaries kept by James Fletcher, Mary's husband. My brother Mal transcribed them. (I have a PDF copy, Mal has the originals.) James mentions Scotland frequently.

I hope this is helpful to you. Speaking for Mal and my nephew, Brent, we're glad to share any documents and information that we've managed to gather. Love your website, William. I'm delighted to "meet" you!

My best wishes to you and your family,

Lynne Smith

  •  Webmaister: well what a wonderful email to receive, Lynne thank you so much for getting in touch with me and I look forward to further correspondence. I have added some details to this your Grandmother's webpage.
We share the same Great Grandparents Donald & Rosann McArthur which makes us second cousins
    William x

My nephew Brent has had no luck finding a death certificate for James Fletcher.
On the 1920 census Mal (my brother) discovered that James (47 yrs), Mary (42 yrs) and the children Cissie (14 yrs),
Minnie (9 yrs), Harold (8 yrs) and Grace (our mother and Brent's maternal grandmother, 5 yrs) lived at 285 Whipple Street in Fall River, Massachusetts.

A lot happened between 1920 and 1930. James died, and Mary and her young children left Fall River for Chicago to live with Aunt Cissie and her husband. What we don't know is how or when Aunt Cissie met Uncle Lefty. Did any of us ever ask? No, of course not. :)

James, Mary, Bessie, Auntie, Aunt Cissie and Uncle Lefty are all buried in Fall River in the Fletcher family plot. I saw James and Mary and Bessie's graves when I took a trip to Fall River with Aunt Cissie and Uncle Lefty in 1972. I'm thinking of suggesting to Brent that he contact the cemetery in Fall River. The sextant might know something.

Lynne.

My mother was Diane Pocock, her mother was Minnie Fletcher Pocock and Minnie's mother was Mary McArthur Fletcher.

I have traced Mary McArthur and James Fletcher to Canada and then the U.S.  They lived in the Fall River, Massachusetts area.  Their oldest daughter, Ann, was born in Scotland, their next child, my grandmother, she was called Minnie but her given name was Elizabeth, was born in Canada along with her brother, Harold.  Grace and Ruth Fletcher were born in Massachusetts.

Thank you so much for the information on your website and the photographs - truly lovely!  If you would like to contact me that would be great, but no pressure.  Please feel free to log on to Ancestry.com to look at my family tree
