Donald McArthur ( Squire )  Born 13 April 1924, Glasgow, Scotland
Died October 1987, Glasgow, Scotland           back to family tree

Webmaister :- Old newspaper cutting from Glasgow's Evening Times I found in my Da's house,
not great quality but worth sharing I feel.....

"Blaze hero John McDonald today told of his dramatic dash to save his stepfather's life.
Within seconds of hearing a massive explosion from the house across the street early today he was out of bed and at the scene. With flames sweeping through the house at 12 Penicuik Street, Carntyne, Glasgow. John knew he had only seconds to save Donald McArthur, 63, who was trapped behind a wall of fire.
John smashed down the locked front door and plunged into the house. He found the badly burned body of hid stepfather lying in the hallway unconscious. John, 40 said " I thought he could still be alive but I wasn't sure. His face and hands were badly burned. Despite the flames and choking smoke I managed to drag him out the house and on to the landing. With the help of a family friend, Susan Brown, I was able to wrap his body in a blanket and carry him downstairs to the close entrance."
John tried to go back into the blazing building to rescue an elderly neighbour Mrs Mary Moore trapped on the top floor. But he was held back by firemen who led the woman and other neighbours to safety by turntable ladder.
He was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.........?.........
Blaze hero John said. "My father is in a critical condition and in intensive care. His body is badly burned and his lungs have been badly affected by smoke. But he is a fighter and ....?..... he will pull through"
Mr. McDonald was released after treatment for smoke inhalation. Mrs Moore 78, has also recovered.
Mr. McArthur lived on his own. Fire officials say the house was gutted and extensive damage has also been caused to flats above the first floor dwellings where Mr.McArthur lived.
.

Sadly Uncle Donald died aged 63 in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary on 18th October 1987 at 5:45am.
Cause of death was bronchial pneumonia inhalation of fire gasses. Physician was Dr.G.B. Roberts
